Although they don't project in the same way modern birch drums do the depth and quality of the tone is well worth it since it sounds less harsh. These Luddys have an amazing vintage tone that's got the warmth and darkness of poplar and mahogany. He quit drumming and stored the drum kit for over 40 years when I bought them in like-new condition at an estate sale in Utah. She custom-sewed drum cases for him out of denim and asked him to put his drums in storage since she hated the loud noise. I myself am fond of WWII drums which had wooden hoops and lugs, particularly my Leedy Dreadnaughts. The original owner bought this drum kit (manufacture stamp May, 1965) and played it for a bit before meeting his wife. Gretsch kits in Moonglow Satin, Anniversary Sparkle, or Midnight Sparkle. Slingerland kits in Sparkling Peacock, Capri or Fiesta Pearl finish.

(the floor tom was crap, but I got another one (close match) off eBay.įor the most part, drumset collecting comes down to originality and rarity, and how much room you have. The other 3 drums (22" bass, 12" and 13" toms) would probably bring around $400-500 themselves.

I bought it for $695 and could have sold just the ride cymbal for over $700 (I traded it to a friend for some gear instead) Then I found out the snare by itself was worth $500. I have a mid-60s Ludwig that someone essentially paid me $1000 to take from them. If you do your homework and scour the used marketplace (especially outside of eBay) you can usually get a heck of a deal on a vintage kit. Depending on the model you're looking for, you could spend as little or as much as you could imagine. Slingerland stuff seems to go for a little less than Ludwigs and Gretsch, Camco, and Rogers seem to go for a premium. Their value ranges due to condition and how much demand is out there for them. They were called WFL until the late '50s. (if you haven't looked into this guy, do) Ludwigs, of course, are classic.

The "drumset" really took off after WWII, and really in the mid-50s with the advent of "rock & roll" and the addition of drumset to country music thanks to Buddy Harmon. even in the 1940s they looked (and sounded) really weird with things like tacked bottom heads, 28" bass drums and gut snares. Drum "sets" as they are seen now have only been around about 100 years.
